P.K.MOOKKAYYA DEVAR (1923 1979)
Unforgettable Great Leader
 
Mookkayya Devar was born to Kattamuthu Devar and Chinnamal on 4.4.1923 in Pappapatti village, near Usilampatti, Madurai district. He participated in social activities in his very young age as a student leader. He formed Kallar association and took all steps to the upliftment of Piramalai Kallar a major sub-sect of Devar community in southern TamilNadu.
 
Later, he joined in forward Bloc a Indian Political Party, which was formed by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, under the guidance of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Devar. He contested in Periakulam Assembly constituency in 1952. General Election as a forward Bloc candidate and was elected.
 
From that year onwards, he was to be a member in the TamilNadu Assembly or Indian Parliament. (1971 to 1975 M.P. from Ramanathapuram)
 
In 1963, he was elected as Vice President of All India Forward Bloc after the demise of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Devar. In 1971, he was elected as the President of All India Forward Bloc. He demised on 6.9.1979 and he was laid to rest in the premises of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Devar College at Usilampatti.
 
He was the founder of the said college. The helps he done to the downtrodden people, particularly Piramalai Kallar were numerous. Hundreds and thousands of youths got jobs in government and private particularly police by his soft and honest approach.
 
Mukkulathore community can never forget the great leader.
